Winter is coming, but don’t stow away your camping gear just yet.
The cold season and camping may seem like an unlikely pair, but, frosty adventures await those who dare to try winter camping.

In addition to experiencing fewer crowds and spending the night in beautiful snowy landscapes, there’s another benefit to camping in winter wonderland: it can be SO COZY!

—That is, of course, if you know how to do it right.—

The following tips will deem you a master of winter camping in no time!

LAYER UP

Base Layer

For your base layer, choose wool over cotton for enhanced heat retention. Consider wearing thermal undershirts, leggings, and wool socks for additional warmth.

Middle Layer

For your middle layer, opt for wool or fleece. These fabrics keep you insulated by trapping air close to the body, which prevents heat loss effectively.

Outer Layer

Your outer layer of clothing should protect you from wind, rain, and snow. This can be achieved by wearing a water-resistant jacket and high-quality waterproof shoes.

Accessories

Complete your winter outfit with essential accessories such as a beanie or hat, a scarf, and mittens for comprehensive warmth and comfort.

CAMPFIRE

Without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable aspects of winter camping is the experience of spending the night by the campfire, holding a steaming cup of hot cocoa.
The flickering flames don’t just provide warmth but also serve as a versatile tool for cooking and, of course, making s’mores.

Starting a fire in the snow can pose challenges; avoid letting your fire come into direct contact with the snow, as the melting snow can douse the flames.
You can prevent this by flatting the snow first and using rocks to elevate the fire. However, the most convenient is bringing a portable fire pit like this to protect your fire from the elements.

Preparation is the key to success, and while searching for dry wood in your surroundings may be an option, it becomes more difficult after rain or snowfall.
You might need to venture deep into the bushes to find dry, suitable logs. Or you could save yourself the trouble by bringing dried wood with you.

When igniting the fire, various methods can be effective. The most convenient way is using a fire starter, but you could choose to go the more eco-way and use old newspaper, or even tree bark and pine cones to aid in kindling the flames.

HEATED BLANKET

Camping in a destination where campfires are off-limits? No need to fret about staying warm—we’ve got you covered. Consider investing in a top-notch heated blanket for those brisk nights.

Experience the comfort of your couch, even while you’re on the move! If you haven’t discovered the wonders of a double camping chair, now’s the time.
Its spacious design allows you to cocoon with your adventure companions, fostering a sense of togetherness as you unwind after a day of exploration.

Whether you’re gathering around a campfire, cuddling up under your heated blanket, or enjoying a picturesque sunset, you won’t regret buying a double camping chair.

ENTERTAINMENT

Winter camping does have a disadvantage though, it gets dark way quicker than during the summertime. This will cut your daily exploration time short, but the longer evenings are nothing to dread.

Once again, preparation is key. If you bring enough entertainment, such as books, board games, or even a speaker to play some music, you can turn those cold evenings into unforgettable nights with your fellow travelers.

FAIRY LIGHTS

Last but not least, the easiest way to brighten up your winter camping experience is by adding fairy lights! These tiny, twinkling lights don’t just create a cozy and enchanting atmosphere, but also provide practical illumination around your campsite. String them up around your camping area, tent, or nearby trees to transform the darkness into a warm and inviting space.

Fairy lights are lightweight, easy to pack, and can run on battery power or a powerbank, making them a delightful and functional addition to your winter camping gear.
Whether you’re reading a book, playing games, or simply enjoying the winter night, the soft glow of fairy lights adds a touch of magic to those frosty evenings.
